Financial Reform Debate To Begin This Week

Debate for a financial reform bill in the Senate is expected to begin this week, and will certainly be filled with plenty of opposition from Senate Republicans who have voiced their disproval of the process over the past week.

All 41 Republicans in the Senate voiced their disproval of the regulations proposed by Democrats, even though Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stated that Republicans wanted a bipartisan and all-inclusive bill. Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) pointed to a year's worth of interactions and negotiations with Republicans as a response to McConnell's insinuation that the process has not been open to Republican involvement.

While the Republicans in the Senate have not yet threatened a filibuster, it is likely that they will send out such signals later when debate gets underway. Allowing a strong financial reform bill, with a thoroughly Democratic imprint, to pass will more than likely threaten Republican chances for a massive pickup in the House and Senate this fall.
